Virazole

Chemical Name: RIBAVIRIN

General Information

Ribavirin (previously known as tribavirin in the UK) is an antiviral medicine that is used to treat viral infections. It acts by inhibiting the production of the viral genetic material (RNA), which is required for the reproduction and hence survival of the virus.

Ribavirin itself does not kill the virus, but prevents the virus from reproducing. Therefore, the virus is present in lower numbers. The lower viral numbers mean that the body's immune system can more easily overcome the virus.

Ribavirin is used in the treatment of a severe viral lung infection in infants and young children. It is given in the form of an inhaled aerosol so that it may act directly on the infected lungs. Ribavirin is more effective if used early in the illness.

What is it used for?

Severe viral respiratory infection (respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) bronchiolitis) in infants and young children.
