Generic Serevent Diskus, aerosol

Chemical Name: SALMETEROL

Common uses

This medicine is a beta receptor stimulant used to prevent or minimize problems in persons with breathing difficulties including asthma and chronic obstructive disorders of the lungs such as chronic bronchitis or emphysema. It works by opening the air passages in the lungs to improve breathing. It will not stop an asthma attack once one has started. Salmeterol is generally combined with another effective controller-type asthma medicine (such as an inhaled corticosteroid). This medicine may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Before using

Warning: salmeterol may rarely be associated with serious asthma attacks (potentially fatal). African-american patients and patients prescribed salmeterol when their asthma condition is worsening may have an increased risk of this event. If you find that your fast-acting inhaler is not working as well or if you need to use it more often than usual, such as using 4 or more puffs daily or using more than 1 inhaler every 8 weeks, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. This may be a sign of worsening asthma which is a serious condition. Do not suddenly stop using this medicine. Doing so may cause your breathing condition to get worse. Discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine. Inform your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding.
