Common uses

Generic Selsun (SELENIUM SULFIDE) is a cytostatic agent used to treat dandruff and other conditions of the scalp or skin.

Before using

Inform your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding.

Directions

Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. If you do not have directions from your doctor, follow the instructions on the package. Shake well before using. To use this medicine on the scalp: massage 1 or 2 teaspoonfuls of the medicine into the wet scalp. Leave on scalp for 2 to 3 minutes. Rinse scalp thoroughly. Repeat application and rinse thoroughly. Wash hands well after treatment. If you are using this medicine before or after bleaching, tinting or permanent waving, rinse hair for at least 5 minutes in cool running water.

To use this medicine on skin: apply a sufficient amount to cover affected areas of the body. Lather well with a small amount of water. Leave the medicine on the skin for 10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly in the shower. Wash hands well after treatment.

Store this medicine at room temperature in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light. If you miss a dose of this medicine, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Cautions

If your symptoms do not improve within 1 to 2 weeks or if they become worse, check with your doctor. Do not use this medicine more often than recommended by your doctor. Do not get this medicine in your eyes or on the inside of your nose or mouth. Do not use this medicine on broken or blistered skin. Do not apply this medicine to genital area. If you get this medicine on your genitals, rinse thoroughly with water. This medicine may damage jewelry. Remove jewelry before using this medicine.

Possible side effects

Side effects, that may go away during treatment, include increase in mild hair loss or thinning, hair discoloration, or oiliness or dryness of hair and scalp. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. Check with your doctor as soon as possible if you experience skin irritation or rash. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.

If you take too much

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. This medicine may be harmful if swallowed.

Additional information

Do not share this medicine with others for whom it was not prescribed. Do not use this medicine for other health conditions. Keep this medicine out of the reach of children. If using this medicine for an extended period of time, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
